Welcome to Literacy Volunteers of
Chautauqua County

ImageIn an area where 1 out of 5 families does not speak any English in the home and 33% of residents age 18-24 have neither a high school diploma nor GED our mission is:

"To promote and foster increased literacy in Chautauqua County, primarily through free, non-discriminatory, student-oriented, one-to-one volunteer tutoring of functionally illiterate and non-English speaking people."

30 million adults in the US are functionally illiterate meaning they can barely read write or understand written text. Locally 12% of Chautauqua County's population over the age of 16 is funtionally illiterate.

Literacy Volunteers of Chautauqua County was established in 1969. As we enter into our forty-first year of service to adults in the county, we are appreciative to all of our tutors, benefactors, volunteers and friends.
We are proud of the accomplishments and success stories, which span four decades. We look forward to much success and the launching of new and innovative programs in the coming decade. For example, our monthly Book Sales under the direction of Martha Wiser not only bring the organization extra funds, but also offer the community an opportunity to purchase books at a reasonable price.

The agency is pleased to have the following individuals serving on the 2009 - 2010 Board of Directors:

Amanda Schwert-Walden, Executive Director   Dr. Minda Rae Amiran, President

Gerry Rocque, Vice President                     Barbara Yochym, Treasurer

Margo Perello, Secretary                                          Judge Walter Drag

Carter Rowland                                                          Kathy Brown

Chris Schaeffer                                                          Dr. Moon Ro

                                                 Prudencio Ortiz

On September 23, 2009 we lost our long time board member and former treasurer, John Formanowicz after a long battle with cancer. His presence will be missed.

Literacy Vounteers of Chautauqua County made application for re-accreditation this fall. In October, we were notified by ProLiteracy that our organization had successfully completed the recreditation process.
